Visegrád

Visegrád, the smallest and also the oldest town in Hungary

There are only a little more than 1700 people living in this community in Pest County. In the area of Visegrád the earliest traces of human presence lead to the Neolithic age, and the region has been inhabited without interruption since the end of the Bronze Age. Owing to the favourable conditions and its key strategic role, historically the town has always been in the focus of interest. On the page of Travelport.hu you can choose from the offers of several hotels.

How to get to Visegrád?

The town is located along route no. 11, 43 km from Budapest to the north. It can be accessed by car or bus, or by ship on the Danube. There are scheduled and chartered ships available for the passengers in the ports of MAHART. Passengers and vehicles coming from the other bank are transported by a ferry that crosses the river at least once every hour.

Sights in Visegrád

The 13th century citadel on the top of the mountain and the 14th century royal palace at the foot of the mountain are the hallmarks of the town. Its heyday was under the reign of King Matthias, the Renaissance King also known for his good taste: it was expanded by a terrace, a decorative backyard, a decorative well made of red marble and a bath. Visitors to the castle of coming from faraway countries were referring to it as a paradise on earth. Later the building started deteriorating, it was ravaged by fire and the deposits rolling down from the side of the mountain buried it completely. Thanks to the archaeological digs and restoration works going on for decades, the Renaissance decorative backyard of the Palace has been reconstructed according to the old designs. The Citadel also shows to the visitors what kind of fortress it used to be, as part of it was rebuilt, by completing the original walls. This castle offers the most beautiful view on the Curve of the Danube. An important unit of the fortress complex, the 13th century donjon was completely preserved, there is no similar building along the Danube in terms of size. The origin of wells and statues of the former Renaissance palace can be seen in the five-story, 31 m high Salomon Tower of a hexagonal shape.
