Sights in Visegrád
The 13th century citadel on the top of the mountain and the 14th century royal palace at the foot of the mountain are the hallmarks of the town. Its heyday was under the reign of King Matthias, the Renaissance King also known for his good taste: it was expanded by a terrace, a decorative backyard, a decorative well made of red marble and a bath. Visitors to the castle of coming from faraway countries were referring to it as a paradise on earth. Later the building started deteriorating, it was ravaged by fire and the deposits rolling down from the side of the mountain buried it completely. Thanks to the archaeological digs and restoration works going on for decades, the Renaissance decorative backyard of the Palace has been reconstructed according to the old designs. The Citadel also shows to the visitors what kind of fortress it used to be, as part of it was rebuilt, by completing the original walls. This castle offers the most beautiful view on the Curve of the Danube. An important unit of the fortress complex, the 13th century donjon was completely preserved, there is no similar building along the Danube in terms of size. The origin of wells and statues of the former Renaissance palace can be seen in the five-story, 31 m high Salomon Tower of a hexagonal shape.
