Kiskunhalas, home of the lace makers
With a population of 28 000, this city in Bács-Kiskun county is situated 120 km from Budapest. The name of Halas is known all over the world for its lace making, invented by Árpád Dékáni and Mária Markovits.
How to get to Kiskunhalas?
Kiskunhalas is situated along route no. 53. From the direction of Baja take route no. 55, from motorway M5 you can also go in the direction of Kiskunmajsa. It is also easily accessible by rail, being an important railway junction. The railway line of Budapest-Szabadka-Belgrád goes across the city, also, the railway line connecting Kiskunfélegyháza and Baja with the city ends here.
Sights in Kiskunhalas
If you visit the city, be sure to see the Halas Lace Museum. Right after the world famous lace of Brussels, the masterpieces of Hungarian lacemaking women are the most well-known in the world. In the museum you can see a live demonstration of how lace is made. Other sights worth visiting include János Thorma Museum, the Sáfrik windmill and the statue of the sorrowful kuruc (warrior in the 18th century). The 1st World Reunion of Cumans is held between September 12 and 27. To commemorate the 770th anniversary of the first settlement of the Cumans in 1239, Kiskunhalas has come up with some great programs. People in Halas like to eat well and cater for all needs of their guests. There are several inns and restaurants waiting for the visitors, with characteristic Hungarian flavours and dishes of the Great Plain. Sour liver is a special delicacy of Halas. Salt Lake, a lake near the city, is also an ideal tourist destination. It has some good angling places and bathing is also allowed along its embankment.
