How to get to Gödöllő?
Gödöllő is a traffic junction, route no. 3 and the M3 motorway cross it. You can also get to Vác, Pécel and Jászberény from the city. Main railway no. 80 also passes the city and the terminal of the suburban railway of Gödöllő is situated here. Over three hundred thousand visitors see one of the most beautiful castles in Hungary, the former residence of the king in Gödöllő, only an hour’s drive from the capital. It was built for Antal Grassalkovich. The elegant castle of Gödöllő, one of the most beautiful buildings of its time, has been used as a model for several architects of castles all over the country. Empress Maria Theresa visited the castle several times, but it was under the reign of Emperor France Joseph that the castle became the favourite Hungarian residence of Austro-Hungarian rulers. The wife of the Emperor, the idolized Queen Elizabeth, affectionately called Sissy by her supporters, was especially fond of Gödöllő. Today the main building of the castle receives its visitors in its old glory. Its 26 rooms restored to their original state, visitors can see, among others, apartments of the Emperor and the Empress, the salon and the study of Emperor Franz Joseph. The castle and its backyard frequently serves as the site of classical music concerts and cultural festivals. The Baroque Theatre, restored to its original state and once again operating after 200 years, is a unique building even by European standards. Further sites of the city include: arboretum, the Castle Church, the Park and the World Tree. The 12 m high oak statue of sculptor József Velekei was inaugurated in 1992, the commemorate the Day of Hungarian Liberty.

Fortunately, recently the number of quality places and events in Gödöllő has kept rising. Programs most frequently visited by tourists include the Baroque Castle Days and the Coronation Week-end in the Castle. The Grassalkovich Castle came to be used by Queen Elizabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1867, as a coronation gift. It is that event - which has brought an important change in the life of the castle - that the Castle remembers every year, by the re-enactment of the coronation ceremony, complete with pleasant family weekend programs.
